REALLY GOOD
1st DEEP-FRIED BEANCURD WITH SALT AND PEPPER
Dragon-i Peking Duck Restaurant @ 1 Utama Shopping Mall, Petaling Jaya
Wow. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill tofu. There’s a crispy (not crunchy!) batter forming a shell around those little delicate cubes of soft, silken tofu that gives an amazing textural contrast in one bite. How they do that without breaking up that soft tofu is a mystery to me.
2nd CHILLED TOFU WITH PIDAN
Folklore, Singapore
“Rich but clean tasting tofu dish with pickled radish and century egg, great with spicy food as helps with reducing the heat.” Served cold, this was a perfect counter to the spicy food that we had. One of my favourite dishes of this meal. Definitely worth ordering!
3rd DEEP-FRIED TOFU
Gan Nen Do, Kuala Lumpur
That dashi was everything. We had 3 portions of this!
4th TOFU TOPPED WITH SPICY CENTURY EGG SAUCE
Chao Zhou Fang 朝粥坊, Petaling Jaya
That spicy century egg sauce had an unexpected numbing effect. We couldn’t get enough of it. A few of us even added some of that sauce into our congee. Hush! Don’t tell the chef!
5th SPINACH TOFU WITH MUSHROOMS
Tuck Kee Restaurant Sdn. Bhd., Ipoh
Uber smooth tofu. We think it might be house-made.
6th SMELLY TOFU
Jin Taiwan 今台湾, Puchong
This seemingly boring looking dish is anything but boring. Once this reaches your table, your nose will be assaulted by the glorious, tantalizing aroma of... clogged drains... 😂. Definitely not for the faint-hearted! The best way to eat this is to top the piece of tofu with some pickled cabbage and spicy bean sauce, pop it into your mouth and enjoy. The burst of flavours is indescribable!
7th AGEDASHI TOFU
Rakuzen @Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang Jaya
Soft, silky tofu which has been deep-fried and served in broth. How does one not like tofu?
8th SOFT BIG STINKY TOFU (ORIGINAL)
Chew Chew Chow Tofu Puchong Food Truck 超超臭豆腐蒲种餐车, Puchong
Served with pickles and their original chili sauce. I love, love, love, love, love the big stinky ones. Imagine biting into that crispy exterior and revealing soft, juicy (yes juicy!) tofu with some crunchy pickled cabbage for contrast. So satisfying. Smells like clogged drains but tastes so damn good. Ugh. My mouth is watering right now and I’ll craving for more.
10th “CHOY HEONG” BRAISED BEANCURD
Zhia Kitchen Sunway Industrial Park, Petaling Jaya
The way they fry the beancurd until it’s crisp on the outside and still soft inside… I will never be able to achieve that at home. The braised meat topping was delicious as well and kept us going back for more. All in all this is a great restaurant to have a nice Chinese meal.
11th DEEP-FRIED TOFU WITH DIPPING SAUCE
Laem Charoen Thai Seafood (Sunway Pyramid), Petaling Jaya
Came with a very nice mildly spicy sauce with some crunchy peanuts in it. Sorry I forgot to take a photo of the dipping sauce. Again, it was chaotic 😅.
12th TOFU NUGGETS
4Fingers Crispy Chicken @ Puchong Utama, Puchong
Wowee, so much better than what I expected! Despite the slight condensation from being in the box, these tofu nuggets were still crispy and yet soft and spongy on the inside. Very nice and I would definitely reorder!
16th YONG TAU FOO
Pasar Besar Seremban Food Court, Seremban
I’m never quite sure what to categorize this dish under. Yes, the name literally means stuffed tofu. But it also covers a variety of vegetables that can also be stuffed. This stall’s YTF is very nice. We went and ordered a second round after polishing off 15 pieces in 10 minutes.
17th YONG TAU FOO
Yuan Kie Kopitiam, Bentong
I never know quite what to categorize this as. The name literally means “stuffed tofu” but it’s much more than that. Apart from tofu we had eggplant, green chilli, bitter gourd and tofu puffs. The tofu puffs are a must-order as Bentong is well known for that.
18th ĐẬU HŨ CHIÊN SẢ ỚT
Mekong Delights, Selangor
Fried tofu with lemongrass and chilli. This was very good. We had to order another portion because we couldn’t get enough of it.
19th BRAISED TAU KWA
Restoran Law Cheang Kee 璋记饭店, Nibong Tebal
It’s a simple dish of firm tofu quick-braised with some vegetables and seafood. But it’s extremely tasty and goes well with white rice.
20th PRESERVED EGG TOFU
House Of PETAI Restaurant, Puchong
Cold tofu topped with preserved eggs. Done well and very flavourful.
PRETTY GOOD
23rd TAUHU BAKAR
Taman Selera PJ Old Town, Petaling Jaya
Grilled crispy tofu pockets stuffed with bean sprouts, jicama and crushed peanuts in rojak sauce. These were really good. Sweet, savoury, crunchy, crispy bites of delight! Don’t waste time with chopsticks and just pick them up with your fingers. It will be messy but there is a washing area nearby. Bonus review - The popiah was just ok. I think the skin is a bit too thick and needs more items in the filling. Still a nice snack, but I would definitely recommend the tauhu bakar instead. (From stall #45)
24th BRAISED TOFU WITH ANGLED LUFFA
Restoran Hua Xing, Petaling Jaya
One of those family favourites that we usually end up ordering. Tofu was soft and silky smooth.
26th TAHU SAMBAL
Restoran Devi's Corner, Petaling Jaya
Super spicy and I liked it a lot. Not so suitable for those who can’t handle the heat!
