4th TOM YUM GOONG
Kompassion, Petaling Jaya
BRIEF: “Tom yum Prawn is best with a bit of chili paste. However you can request for clear version too!” SOOT’S TAKE: Requested the red version. This brought my father back to his days in Seagate Thailand (‘s canteen?) where he said he’d had (and had since not forgotten) the best tom yam he’d ever had.
7th SPECIAL SOUTH+ESAN SEAFOOD TOMYUM
Khao Kaeng Thai Restaurant, Singapore
BRIEF: “Savor the bold, aromatic broth bursting with fragrant herbs and spices, packed with fresh seafood and a spicy-sour kick that that brings bold Thai flavors with every spoon.” SOOT’S TAKE: I would not have described the broth as bold. It was aromatic enough but rather one-note and it lacked spicy kick.
8th RED TOMYAM SOUP | 红东炎汤 | ต้มยำน้ำข้น
Baan Thai 2 Seafood & Thai Cuisine, Kuala Lumpur
This was somewhere between pretty good and just ok, possibly because we requested for it to be at the lowest spice level. 🫤
9th TOM YUM SEAFOOD
La Moon Thai Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur
Nice, warm, comforting flavors but overall, somewhat muted. I wonder if it might’ve been fuller-bodied if we’d requested a spicier version?
10th TOM YAM STEAMED FISH | ต้มยำปลานึ่ง
Laai Thai Kitchen, Kuala Lumpur
Broth’s good but it’s a bit tiresome going through fish and bone with every spoonful to avoid choking 😪

First time trying a veggie version of this soup. Quite spicy.
