AMAZING
1st 'CENDOL' PANDAN
South&East, Singapore
BRIEF: “Pandan "Panna Cotta", Coconut Foam, Gula Melaka & Coconut Rum Infused Sago and Charcoal Toasted Coconut Flakes” SOOT’S TAKE: A brilliant interpretation of a classic dessert, although the pandan element was more of a mousse. Sempurna!
2nd LOACKER TORTINA DARK
Sheng Siong Supermarket, Singapore
Dark chocolate tartlet of scrumptious hazelnut cream sandwiched between crispy wafers and enrobed with 60% cocoa dark chocolate. Plus the projects behind this (“The Cocoa Farming Program” & “Italian Hazelnut Orchards”) help improve sustainability. So it’s a win-win (for a minute or 2) until it’s gone and I forget about it.
REALLY GOOD
4th AIR BATU CAMPUR (ABC)
Sistars Kitchen, Petaling Jaya
A nicer version of Ice Kacang because it’s got gula melaka. Refreshing on a hot day.
5th SOOTY’S CUP
Sangkaya Sunway Putra Mall, Kuala Lumpur
3 scoops of coconut ice cream with my choice of toppings. In this case, slivers of fresh coconut, crushed peanuts and sweet corn.
6th REBECCA
New Chapter by The Owls Cafe, Kuala Lumpur
Waffle with strawberries, blueberries & bananas and topped with homemade Earl Grey ice cream along with almond flakes and coconut flakes. There was no maple syrup as suggested on the menu, but it still worked.
7th TAKO ตะโก้
PJ Khao Man Gai, Petaling Jaya
Maybe the best ones I’ve ever had.
8th MOCHI FRASIER
KLCG Confectionery & Bakery, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur
BRIEF: “A unique twist on the classic strawberry shortcake.” SOOT’S TAKE: “Japanese-style strawberry shortcake completely wrapped in a sheet of mochi. Not too sweet.”
9th YURI MATCHA
KLCG Confectionery & Bakery, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur
BRIEF: “A smooth matcha mousse layer melts in your mouth, balancing subtle bitterness and sweetness.” SOOT’S TAKE: Another not-too-sweet entremet of bittersweet matcha mousse, and cookie, tart raspberry gelee(?), and what I suspect to be some other white chocolate-based elements they could have elaborated on (but did not) in the item description.
10th RED RUBIES ทับทิมกรอบ
Yak Yim Thai Kitchen, Petaling Jaya
Nice to have this again after over 2 years which was when I attempted it at home.
12th WAFFLES & ICE CREAM
Sunday Folks Holland Village, Singapore
Sea Salt Gula Melaka ice cream atop freshly baked Belgian waffles paired with strawberries, blueberries, Nama Chocolate and drizzled with maple syrup & chocolate hazelnut sauce.
13th PISTACHIO LATTE
Good Husband Patisserie (Eco Galleria), Johor
(Unsurprisingly) Pistachio | Coffee although I barely tasted the latte(r).
15th LOACKER TORTINA DARK
Sheng Siong Supermarket, Singapore
Treated myself to this at its pre-inflation (then non-sale but now on sale) price. Glad it still satisfies.
16th CHENDOL
Old Amoy Chendol (Main), Singapore
Never a bad idea to begin with iced dessert in this searing weather. So refreshing but alas, so small!
17th BEATRIX BAKES’ RHUBARB CUSTARD CRUMBLE PIE
Soots Cook Nook, Private
Happy National Rhubarb Pie Day! This “four-part tart filled with creamy vanilla custard, sweet roasted rhubarb and ginger, and topped with a crunchy butter-oat streusel” from “BEATRIX BAKES” may be the most delicious pie I’ve ever made. It took preparing 4 elements from scratch to get here but they were all worth it, and the fantastic flaky AF crust definitely deserves special mention! Indisputably a baking triumph!
18th BLACK FOREST CAKE
Le Matin Patisserie @ ION, Singapore
BRIEF: A Cherry and Port mousse with a boozy Cherry and Plum Jam encased in the thinnest coating of Dark Chocolate and then glazed with a shiny Cherry glaze. Chocolate Sable, Crunchy Puffed Rice, and Cherry Ganache. SOOT’S TAKE: Lovely and well-crafted entremet but if only it weren’t so teeny tiny.
19th CENDOL SIGNATURE
Sangkaya @ LaLaport, Kuala Lumpur
2 mini scoops each of coconut and gula melaka ice cream with the requisite cendol toppings + a few slices of fresh young coconut in a coconut shell. This was always going to work.
21st DESSERT OF THE DAY
Loulou - French Cuisine & Wine Bar, Singapore
A deconstructed something or other with lemon curd and fresh berries. Nice but extraordinarily meager.
22nd HONEY PIE
WHEATHEAD BREAD & PASTRY, 149 TAMPINES STREET 12 #08-96 TAMPINES PARK SINGAPORE (521149)
My first time trying honey pie. The filling’s sweetness is nicely tempered with the salt in it. I will try their cardamom bun tomorrow.
23rd PISTACHIO TEXTURES
Le Matin Patisserie, Singapore
BRIEF: “Pistachio crunch, Pistachio Ganache, Pistachio Financier, Pistachio Mousseline, Pistachio Chiffon, Pistachio chantilly with Iranian pistachio.” SOOT’S TAKE: Many layers, many textures and singular in flavor.
24th SUZETTE
Nesuto Singapore, Singapore
Entremet of almond orange sponge topped with almond streusel coated with Valrhona Dulcey, then enveloped in ‘Grand Marnier’ Opalys Mousse containing a central divot of ‘Grand Marnier’ Burnt Caramel. This would make a perfect autumnal dessert except it’s hot as Hades here.
25th WET MARKET TO TABLE’S RED RUBY
Soots Cook Nook, Private
red ruby Received a small bounty of jackfruit and seized the opportunity to attempt what I’d always assumed to be a quintessential Thai dessert. It turns out, red ruby is “incredibly popular throughout Asia” and what I’ve had at fine Thai restos is easily reproducible at home.
26th PEANUT BUTTER PARFAIT
Supernormal, Melbourne
A thoroughly glorified SNICKERS #winner
27th STRAWBERRY PIE 草莓派
McDonald's Metropolis, Singapore
This pleasantly and surprisingly exceeded my expectations. Would get it again.
28th SMOKED WHISKEY VANILLA ICE CREAM WITH GRANDMA’S HOME BAKED BUTTER CAKE
Atas Sentral, Private Location
Smoked Whiskey Vanilla Ice Cream - Delicious but texture needs work. Grandma’s Home Baked Butter Cake - Excellent
29th CHOCOLATE & NUTS
savour CHRISTMAS 2016, Singapore
From Team Saveur Art: Brownie, Milk Chocolate Mousse, Hand Ground Hazelnuts & Peanuts, Pistachio Ice Cream. They delivered again.
30th 生磨杏仁茶 SWEETENED ALMOND TEA
Summer Pavilion, Singapore
This was more an almond milk type thing served in the style of tea than an actual tea so to speak. I wasn’t expecting much because I’m not generally a fan of a similar Chinese dessert known as almond soup, but this was surprisingly drinkable for its mild almond-y taste.
